16.7.18 SC # 6 near Big Red to Birdsville

With time differences I’m not sure what time we got up today - Reve and I are both confused.

I stayed up and took some shots of my car and tent - will post some pics when I can get them transferred over.

I cleaned up the Bedourie Oven from its PPTSD (Post Pudding Traumatic Stress Disorder) it survived after soaking overnight. This put pack up a little behind schedule.

Phil and Mary found a flat tyre which delayed departure enough for me to finish packing.

Phil jacking the car

Pit crew hard at work.

Checking the spare that was flat this morning - pumped up to monitor before Birdsville
We still managed to be BOT (back on track) before 9.30.

One of the track shots today.

3 vehicles on the salt pan with a few donut rings on it.

Up a dune. They are bigger and steeper at the East end of the Simpson Desert.

Up and over.
From there it was on to Big Red and the challenge to drive it begins. By the time we arrived Col had tried and he and Greg decided the clutch was a bit dicey.

Here we are approaching Big Red.

There are a few defined tracks to choose from.

The vehicles lined up ready to go.

Unhitching then camper.

All made it eventually.

Phil needed to return to retrieve the Ultimate camper - the tiny white dot at the base of Big Red.

There is a better shot of the camper waiting behind two foreign vehicles.

Atop Big Red. Mary walking over to document Phil’s ascent with Camper

Looking from the other direction along Big Red to our vehicles

There we are and it’s starting to get busy.

Some tracks in the dune.

There they are.

Here is the view from Ska parked at the top. It really is a long way up and down.

Once we were all up - Col took an alternate route, Steve got it first go, Stef had a few tries, Mary got it first go and I took two to go’s and was happy with that. Sarah had a go and also got it first time.

Then we gathered up top near our vehicles for the obligatory shot which Steve captured via Drone. ( will post this when I can get to my computer with service etc.

We left Big Red and gathered at the base on other side to pump up the tyres and hit proper gravel and even bitumen roads on our way to Birdsville. We went via the water stop to fill tanks and via the tip to dump rubbish. Then onto the bakery for lunch and coffee.

Ska with tyres pumped and ready to roll

Others pumping up with their compressors.

Steve airing up.
Entering Birdsville
Coffee and lunch. There are no pies - they are awaiting their next meat delivery on Friday. This is post Bash which was obviously really busy.

On my way back from shower all clean with a bag of clean washed clothes to hang out.

Settled in and catching up with photos etc

I went to fuel up and check any shopping etc. nothing needed other than the fuel.

Our unpowered sites have water views and with sunset lots of birds gathered. We have booked for tea at the Birdsville pub.

We took some pics of great sunset colours with plenty of galahs
Sunset over the Diamantina River st back of camp.

The camp.

Galahs with the gentle pinks and purples of sunset.

Sun continues to set as we walk to the pub for tea. Tanks at the end of the street.

Galahs in the trees up the street

The Birdsville pub.

Iconic Birdsville Pub.

Flag flying with moon and Venus in the shot.

Tea time.

From there we walked home, a quick cuppa, hot water bottle and bed.
