30.6.18 Palm Valley CG to a bush camp between Boggy Hole and somewhere.

A very easy start to the day. One loo visit at 6.15 then back to bed.

Col and Greg were up and had fire going. Col, Stef and Greg took off for the walk and we had a leisurely breakfast to start the day, then dishes, pack up and time to just sit, before the fellas arrived back.

Final packing up and off we went bound for Hermannsburg again. We were going to the Cafe at the Old Hermannsburg mission.  It’s an old Lutheran Heritage Area. The scones and toastie with Cappuccino was pretty good.
Having coffee and scones at Hermannsburg bakery.
Then off to head for Boggy Hole.

It was a track pretty much criss crossing the Finke River - a mixture of sandy sections, rocky and some gravel.
Crossing the Finke River
With the sand we stopped to let tyre pressures down.
We thought this might be Boggy Hole - it wasn’t but it looks the same.
We had a slight hiccup with Phil and Mary getting bogged, then Col getting bogged snatching them out. Thankfully with some more air out of all the tyres they were unbogged.
Uh oh. Stuck in the Finke.
Dug out, ready to try again, to no avail.
Time to hook up the recovery gear for a tow out.
Ready to go.

Video of the recovery.
A good days travel - changing scenery with Rocky Gorges, trees areas, waterholes on the Finke River.
Entering some more rocky gorge territory.
Some water in the Finke.
Reeds and red rock walls
Mary photographing salty crust I think.

Maybe this was Boggy Hole

The changing faces of nature.
We pulled up for the night on the edge of the Finke. A great location.
Looking from camp across to a rock wall opposite.
Looking from Rock wall back to camp
A waterhole at base of rock wall.
Some fabulous rocks, reflections and patterns.
Debris caught in the rocks.
Grasses, rocks, trees. Camp in the background.
Great looking grass.
Camp on the banks of the river.
Looking up the Rock wall
Leftovers for tea were the go for most.

A good fire and lots of fun playing with night shots.
Open Shutter for some star trails.
Using a torch to 'paint' the rock wall.
Here comes the moon over the back of rock wall.
While waiting for the moon to pop over the top, we heard the most spine chilling howls of dingoes. There were quite a few, it sounded as though one might be baying at the moon  and others responded. Amazing to listen too.
There she is.
Chatting around the fire.
The trees by moonlight.

  1. Might be a dumb question but does the Fink fill up at certain times of the year? Is this just a bad year with patches dried out or is it always like that?

    1. The Finke does flow occasionally, but this is normal. If it is like some of the rivers in WA, they actually flow under the sand, but I'm not sure about the Finke. It would be awesome to see these areas from the air when they are wet...maybe in the wet season. Something to google I guess.
